Today Ubisoft revealed the first concrete details about Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 4 Double Agent. The game will be available Spring 2006 for Xbox 360, Xbox, PlayStation 2, GameCube, and PC.
"Ubisoft is excited to have re-imagined the Splinter Cell franchise by introducing Sam Fisher as a double agent, expanding the depth of his character," said Tony Kee, vice president of marketing at Ubisoft. "Gamers are going to find themselves immersed in entirely new territory that will allow Ubisoft to expand on its already captivating Splinter Cell franchise."
As the title suggests, this time Sam Fisher finds himself in the role of a double agent. The reason? In order to stop a terrorist attack, he must infiltrate a terrorist group and destroy it from within. Thus players will experience the tension and "gut-wrenching" dilemmas of a double agent, as you must take on missions for both sides. Kill too many of the bad guys and you'll blow your cover, but if you hesitate too long millions may die. Befitting a title of this nature, the game will employ a branching storyline with multiple endings based on how you play the game. Ubisoft promises that it "immerses players in the world of international espionage more completely than ever" by expanding the story and depth of Fisher's character.
As with previous Splinter Cell titles, the missions will take place throughout the world from Asia to Africa to the US. Sam will once again use plenty of gadgets, as well as black-market terrorist weapons. Of course, the series' innovative online play also makes a return with entirely new innovations for each platform. Whether this means online play for GameCube or not (probably not) remains to be seen.
Development has been handled in collaborative fashion between Ubisoft's Montreal, Shanghai, and Annecy, France studios. As a result, Ubisoft promises that each platform will have amazing graphics, fluid animations, advanced A.I. and open level design. Each platform will also feature exclusive content and offer a unique game play experience. How each version will differ at this point is unknown.
